Two Different Versions of Custom Monopoly Games: One Great, One CrappyMonday, November 5. 2007 I was browsing through my recently received Museums of Canada catalogue when the Make-Your-Own Monopoly game caught my eye – especially since Hobby Outlook Magazine declared it an Educational Award winner.Intrigued, I delved a little further… Touted as the first do-it-yourself board game, the Make-Your-Own-Opoly “kit” and that’s what it is -- enables you construct your own one-of-a-kind monopoly game, using your computer and a colour printer. It comes with software and a peel and stick label set that allows you to customize your game. The TDC Games web site states, “After you're done, even the box itself will look like it was manufactured just for you, your family, your town, your school or any special purpose.” It can be purchased from Amazon.com for $17.96. OK, so I thought this was pretty neat, until I did a little research online and found a much better option… My Monopoly, is offered by Hasbro, the toy company that brought you the original monopoly.
You first start by picking a theme such as classic, wedding, birthday, new home or Christmas. Next, use the Board Planner to choose the custom names of your properties. Once you’ve named your properties, you can print your customized creation, so you’ll know exactly what your final game will look like. The online flash interface on the web site is gorgeous, and is easy to use.  The end result, your very own personalized Monopoly game will be shipped to you in 14 working days, in a unique silver tin. Deliveries can only be made to the UK. The only ouch is the $79.99 pound sterling price which converts to approximately $156 Canadian. Still, this version, which comes from the game maker itself is vastly superior than the first option.Before you rush out to buy the make-your-own version at a fraction of the price, I offer a word of caution. After doing a little bit of comparative research, I found out two major deficiencies of the make-your-own version. First of all, look closely and you will find only 9 squares per side on the board, instead of 11 on the original. Why? Who knows! And, as one reviewer wrote on Epinions.com, this version doesn’t include the plastic hotels or houses. Neither of these shortcomings would have been obvious to me at first glance. What’s the better option? The DIFY (do-it-for-me) game or DIY (do-it-yourself) version? In this case, I think it’s pretty clear that the trade-off is between price and authenticity. If you want a game that looks and feels like the real thing, then buy the Hasbro version. One other note...if you are looking for a creative corporate gift, you may want to check out this company based out of the US. The product looks really professional. But be aware that their minimum order is 1,000 games. The moral of the story here? It pays to do a little bit of research online because the definition of personalization varies, as does quality. And in this case you truly do get what you pay for.

I found a company that makes custom-made, personalized Monopoly games for couples, families, schools, companies and organizations. The price is $159 and they work closely with you to develop your own spaces and cards. You can include your own photos as well.

There is a company in the U.S. that makes custom Monopoly games for family, schools, business, etc. They specialize in "single game orders". Their website is www.MY-CUSTOM-MONOPOLY.com.

Unfortunatley, no we can only ship to UK addresses, including only Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
